Microsoft Analyzed 37.5 Million Copilot Conversations. Here鈥檚 How People Use AI.

Created with Midjourney
One of the largest studies on AI usage to date. Microsoft recently analyzed 37.5 million de-identified Copilot conversations between January and September 2025. It鈥檚 one of the first large-scale analyses of how people actually use AI: here鈥檚 what they found.
Three themes dominate. Health and wellness ranked first every month and was the only topic that never fluctuated, indicating that people consistently turn to Copilot for support in seeking a healthier life. Society, culture, and history ranked second, while technology completed the top three.
AI use reflects human rhythms. The data reveals fascinating patterns: questions about religion and philosophy increase during the early morning hours, when people presumably can鈥檛 sleep and begin reflecting on life鈥檚 big questions. Meanwhile, conversations about travel peak during afternoon commutes, when people plan logistics and trips.
From search engine to confidant. Searching for information remains the primary way people use Copilot, but Microsoft reports a measurable increase in people seeking personal advice鈥攏avigating relationships, making important life decisions, and even planning Valentine鈥檚 Day activities. The data suggests people are increasingly involving AI in their most personal decisions.
